Missions: Southminster Church believes that God calls each of us to serve his children.  Though our salvation is not based on the works that we do, we respond to God's abundant love and grace by giving of our time, talent, and resources.

Below and to the left are some of the major areas of mission work that the people of Southminster support and some of the everyday activities where our folks get involved.  Click on each link or contact us to find out more how you can participate.

Seafarer’s Center – Port of Houston: Last year we continued to support the Seafarer’s Center both monetarily and by collecting seamen’s boxes for Christmas.  The Seafarers’ Center was started to offer seamen a safe and caring place to go when they were in port.  Today, it is one of the largest centers for the distribution of Bibles in almost every language.  Many volunteers give of their time and talent to offer activities to our port visitors.  There is a team of ministers on duty at the Seafarer’s Center, including one provided through the Presbytery.  It is an important ministry and outreach at a time when we are aware of the need for global friendships and spreading the Good News! You can learn more my checking their website here

Bethel Ministry:  Southminster supports this local ministry with funds and volunteers.  Bethel ministries provides The AMOR Program, an after school program for the children in its neighborhood.  Mission trips to Piedras Negras, Mexico are a vital part of the Bethel Ministry.  These trips provide opportunities to build homes and other buildings and minister to the men, women and children of Piedras Negras.  By funding an Eagle Scout project at Bethel Ministry they now have a very fine and safe baseball diamond.  Bethel recently hosted over 50 Katrina evacuees that Southminster helped to feed and provide medical care.

Angel TreeEvery Christmas Southminster has the Angel Tree in the church foyer.  A Christmas Tree is decorated with paper angels.  Each of these angels has a name on them that is supplied by one of the local social service agencies.  Members of our congregation "adopt" an angel and share the joy of Christmas by providing support to that family in the form of presents  - a useful gift like clothing and a fun gift like a new toy.

Blood Drives:  Southminster hosts two blood drives a year.  Blood really is the "gift of life" and it is heartening to see the participation of the congregation in these drives.  For more information you can check out here to see if you can participate in this special ministry.

CANCARE:  CanCare offers one-on-one long-term emotional support to cancer patients and family members.  Patients are matched with volunteers who have experienced the same type of cancer and similar circumstances.  This volunteer/patient relationship, strengthened through compassion and respect, enables patients to talk freely, share concerns and express fears without feeling they are hurting or overburdening their loved ones.  All services are free of charge.  Contact June Dempsey at 281-437-8667 for more information.
