The Ministers of the Cloth, Southminster’s Quilting Group, were featured on
the 4 pm newscast of local channel 13 television station KTRK-TV Tuesday,
February 8. A reporter and cameraman arrived that morning around 10 am to
begin interviewing and filming the group as they worked. They stayed for
several hours editing the film and then used a live feed from the church
together with their previously filmed footage when the feature aired.
The station decided to feature the quilters after seeing a recent article in the Houston Chronicle’s This Week Southwest edition about the group and their work creating baptism quilts, Quilts for Soldiers, quilts for Southminster School’s Gala fundraiser, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Linus project which gives quilts to children receiving treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The segment was later posted for about 24 hours on the KTRK website. Organized in 1996 to create baptism quilts for infants baptized at the church, the group has grown to more than 20 participants who range in age from 82 to the mid-thirties. Not all members of the group quilt: some prefer to iron, cut, or hand-stitch the quilts pieced by others. Several times a year the “Junior Ministers of the Cloth” (children and youth) meet with the group to create special projects and learn the craft. The quilted wall hanging in our nursery was created by the Junior Ministers of the Cloth. As the news story showed, fellowship, faith and mutual support are as important to the Ministers of the Cloth as the many quilts they have made and donated to others as part of their mission. If you are interested in participating, come visit next Tuesday morning and plan to go to lunch with the group afterwards. Friends from the community are always welcome and child care is available by reservation with Kathy Coble, Child Care Coordinator (281.438.7489) or kathycoble@hotmail.com. |
